Lebensverzeichnis unserer Mutter.


Unsere Mutter, geb. Block, wurde geboren den 19. April im Jahre 1837 in Südrussland im Dorfe Konteniusfeld. Indem ihre Eltern arm waren, wurde sie nebst noch zwei ihrer Schwestern von ihrem Onkel, Ohm Janzen, im Dorfe Schardau, erzogen.


Im Jahre 1858 trat sie in die erste Ehe mit unserm Vater Franz Görzen. Im Jahre 1874 wanderten unsere lieben Eltern aus nach Amerika mit der großen Alexanderwohlergemeinde und siedelten im Staate Kansas, Marion County an. Im Jahre 1879 wurden unsere lieben Eltern vom Ältesten Jakob A. Wiebe getauft und in der Kr. Mennoniten Gemeinde aufgenommen. Im Jahre 1886 am 11. März starb unser lieber Vater nach fast 22 jähriger Krankheit, während welcher Zeit er, wenn auch nicht immer bettlägerig, so doch bisweilen recht schwer krank war.

Im Jahre 1888 trat sie in die zweite Ehe mit Heinrich Koop. Im Jahre 1892 starb Vater Koop, und sie trat im Jahre 1894 i[n] die dritte Ehe mit Jakob Pankratz. Im Jahre 1895 starb Vater Pankratz, und seit der Zeit ist unsere liebe Mutter Witwe gewesen und hat bei uns gewohnt.


In erster Ehe sind ihr vier Kinder geboren, zwei männliche und zwei weibliche. Das jüngste Mädchen starb im fünften Lebensjahr am Krebs, das zweite im neunten Lebensjahre an Rheumatismus (beide in Rußland). Ihr jüngster Sohn Peter starb in seinem 42. Lebensjahre.


Im Jabre 1915 zog sie mit uns nach dem Staate Arizona und hat während der Zeit, indem sie schon über fünf Jahre an Krebs gelitten hatte, zwei Operationen gehabt, und ist zweimal im Hospital gewesen, hat auch konst viel ärztliche Hilfe gebraucht und ist im Jahre 1916 am 20. September doch an dem Leiden gestorben. Sie ist alt geworden 79 Jahre, 5 Monate und einen Tag. Unsere Mutter hat viel leiden müssen, doch Jesus hat geholfen.


Ihre Nachgebliebenen sind ein Sohn, zwei Schwiegertöchter, fünfzehn Großkinder und fünfzehn Urgroßkinder.


Indem ich verunglückt war, mußte ich nach Kansas, um ärztliche Hilfe zu suchen. Ich nahm wohl von der Mutter Abschied unter der Befürchtung, dass es das letzte Mal fein könnte; aber als mir die Nachricht im Bethesda-Hospital gebracht wurde daß die liebe Mutter gestorben sei, war es fast zuviel für mich; als einziges noch lebendes Kind hätte ich ihr gerne die Augen zugedrückt, wäre gern noch an ihrem Sarge gestanden; aber es war mir nicht vergönnt. Mir ist nur der Grabhügel geblieben. Doch hatte meine Familie Begräbnis gehalten. Br. Gäde hatte zum Text gehabt Psl. 103, 15. 16.


Wir trösten uns damit, daß sie nun ausgelitten und ruhen dark, und wir wollen uns zurufen, recht wachsam und treu zu sein; bald kommt auch unsere Stunde, heimzugehen. Herzlich grüßend,

Our mother, née Block, was born April 19, 1837 in Southern Russia in the village of Konteniusfeld. As her parents were poor, she and two of her sisters were brought up by her uncle, Ohm Janzen, in the village of Schardau.


In 1858 she entered into her first marriage with our father Franz Görzen. In 1874 our dear parents emigrated to America with the large Alexanderwohler congregation and settled in the state of Kansas, Marion County. In 1879 our dear parents were baptized by Elder Jakob A. Wiebe and received into the Kr[immer] Mennonite [Brethren] congregation. In 1886 on March 11, our dear father died after an illness of nearly 22 years, during which time, though not always bedridden, he was at times quite seriously ill.


In 1888 she entered into a second marriage with Heinrich Koop. In 1892 father Koop died, and in 1894 she entered into her third marriage with Jakob Pankratz. In 1895 father Pankratz died, and since then our dear mother has been a widow and has lived with us.


Four children were born to her in her first marriage, two male and two female. The youngest girl died of cancer in her fifth year, the second in her ninth year of rheumatism (both in Russia). Their youngest son Peter died in his 42nd year.


In January 1915 she moved with us to the state of Arizona and during the time she had been suffering from cancer for more than five years, she had two operations, was twice in the hospital, needed a lot of medical help and died of the disease in 1916 on September 20. She was 79 years, 5 months and one day old. Our mother suffered a lot, but Jesus helped.


Her survivors are a son, two daughters-in-law, fifteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.


By being in an accident, I had to go to Kansas to seek medical help. I took leave of my mother, fearing that it might be the last time; but when the news was brought to me in Bethesda Hospital that my dear mother had died, it was almost too much for me; as the only child still living, I would have liked to have closed her eyes, to have stood by her coffin; but I was not allowed to do so. All that remained for me was the burial mound. Yet we held the family funeral. Br. Gäde had as his text Psl[am]. 103, [verses] 15. 16.


We console ourselves with the fact that they have now suffered and are at rest in darkness, and we want to call out to each other to be vigilant and faithful; soon our hour will come to go home.

  1. Although Franz does not mention her by name, GRanDMA indicates that her name is Sarah.

  3. According to GRanDMA, Sarah’s mother is Katharina Janzen #52337.  So it is likely that her uncle was Katharina’s brother.
