BACKGROUND

From the introduction to the English translation, “This document is a translation of the census taken in 1835 of the villages in the Molotschna Colony in South Russia. It includes the year that each Mennonite settler arrived in the colony, the names and relationships within households, and the age of each resident in the colony in 1835. It also indicates changes from the previous census taken in 1816. The original document is in Russian, but settlers arriving or changing location from 1836-1849 are added in German.”

The first column after the male name is the status of the family in 1816. The second column after the male name reflects the status of the family in 1835. The arrival date in Russia is listed in the line prior to the head of the household.
